The streamlined Princess Coronation class were designed to William A. Stanier’s brief, while he was in India, by his very able team, to haul the new ‘Coronation Scot’ and other heavy express passenger services on the West Coast route to Scotland.
City of St. Albans was part of the 1946 Locomotive Renewal Programme and entered traffic in the new lined black livery. It was built with a split platform, so looked like an ex-streamliner, but had significant mechanical differences from previous members of the class. It was attached to a high fronted Mark 2 tender, which was partly riveted to improve strength. No. 6253 City of St. Albans is portrayed as running in 1947.
