The Schools class was designed by R.E.L. Maunsell to fulfil the need for a modern powerful locomotive to work secondary services and also work over the severely restricted Hastings main line. Many parts were common with the Lord Nelson class and the boiler was based on that used for the King Arthurs. The Class were named after famous English public schools.
Their excellent performance often meant they could be found hauling main line express services alongside the larger 4-6-0s. The class is often referred to as ‘Maunsell’s Masterpiece’. Stowe is portrayed in mid-1930s condition. It has been preserved and is owned by the Maunsell Locomotive Society.
