The Merchant Navy pacifics were designed by O.V.S. Bulleid to work the express passenger trains of the Southern Railway. The class originally had air-smoothed casing with chain driven valve gear enclosed in an oil bath. No. 35022 Holland America Line was part of the third series which were attached to larger 6,000 gallon tenders.
The whole class was rebuilt to a more conventional form which included independent sets of Walschaerts valve gear with a screw reverser. It is shown as running in the 1960s after the fitting of AWS (October 1959) and speedometer (November 1960). It has been preserved and is owned by the Royal Scot Locomotive and General Trust.
