The class was designed to William A. Stanier’s brief, while he was in India, by his very able team of: Tom Coleman (Chief Draftsman), Robert Riddles (Stanier’s Personal Assistant) and Roland Bond (Crewe Works Manager). The first of the class appeared in streamlined form to haul the new ‘Coronation Scot’ and other heavy express passenger services on the West Coast route to Scotland.
In 1938 it was decided to build five in standard form, of which Duchess of Montrose was one. Duchess of Montrose was based at Polmadie (Glasgow) from 1940 onwards and worked over Beattock and the Cumbrian fells. It is portrayed as running in 1961.
Built:
Crewe, July 1938 Double Chimney: January 1943 |
Smoke Deflectors: February 1945 Withdrawn: December 1962 |
