The Castle Class were an enlargement of G.J. Churchward’s Star class and were designed by C.B. Collett, the first appearing in 1923. The class was added to over the next 27 years, with many changes being made along the way.
No. 7029 Clun Castle was one of the ‘5098’ class, appearing after nationalisation in 1950. In 1959 it was fitted with a double chimney and four row superheater, plus the mechanical lubricator was moved to beside the smokebox, giving better access to the inside motion.
Clun Castle is portrayed in the condition it hauled the last scheduled steam hauled service out of Paddington, the 16.15 train to Banbury, June 11th 1965. It has been preserved.
