The A4s were designed by H. N. Gresley to haul the LNER’s new streamlined Silver Jubilee service, with the first four appearing in a special livery to match the train. No. 4482 was the first of the following batch which, as the intention was to name the rest of the A4’s after powerful British birds know for swift flight, was named Golden Eagle.
It appeared in the standard green passenger livery, with a parabolic curve on the smokebox side, as it was to be used with the LNER’s passenger stock of varnished teak. This only lasted for a short while before Garter blue was chosen as the standard colour for the class. Golden Eagle is shown as running in 1937.
