The Castle Class, designed by C.B. Collett, were a development of G.J Churchward’s Star Class. The first appeared in 1923 and was proclaimed as Britain’s most powerful passenger locomotive.
In 1925 Pendennis Castle, was chosen to take part in trials on the LNER against their larger pacifics. These were carried out from the 20th April to the 2nd May with Pendennis Castle performing well with its sure-footedness and swift starts, as well as showing the importance of adequately proportioned long-travel valves.
On withdrawal No.4079 was preserved. Pendennis Castle is portrayed in the condition it ran on the LNER in 1925.
